Unfortunately this happens because your center of gravity has shifted to the front and that puts stress on your lower back. When I was pregnant I would make sure to use a pillow under my knees when sleeping on my back and between my knees while on my side. I agree with some of the other answers that swimming is great for stretching all those sore muscles without putting undue stress on them and the feeling of having the extra weight off your hips, knees, and feet. Good luck and congratulations on your upcoming new arrival.

I wouldn't recommend laying on your back while your pregnant! That puts a lot of pressure on your back! You should lay on your side and put a pillow between your legs, or use a body pillow.
I used to use a microwavable hot / cold pillow that I would warm up and place on my lower back. I would also place a few pillows behind my lower back while I sat at my desk at work. I found that putting my feet up also helped relieve some of the lower back pressure.
Hope that helps.

Medication while pregnant is not recommended. What I did for my sore neck and back while pregnant with my son was take an old sock and fill it with rice and place it in the microwave and place it where the pain is. Heatingpads are not recommended during pregnancy because of the heat. The sock will cool down eventually so no chance of overheating yourself.

Yes and no, unfortunately!
I find that cat stretches (on all four, head down, arch back) help, as does child's pose from pilates (on knees, hands outstretched in front of you, push your butt back toward the floor).
Unfortunately, it stretches and helps, but the pain never really goes away.
I'm just hoping the next 25 days until I'm due are quick!

YES!
Pelvic rocking (see links)
Chiropractic care
See a massage therapist.
Rice sock (mentioned above).
I had massages through all three pregnancies...at least once a month. It keeps your body in balance and you have less pregnancy aches and pains. It teaches you to relax for labor. It makes labor easier if your body is balanced.
Rice socks are also great to use in labor. Sprinkle a little lavendar essental oil on it for relaxation.

chiropractic is great for low back pain when you are pregant--- especially since you cant take medication while pregnant....i just treated an 8 month pregnant patient yesterday.
massage is good if your MT is certified to do prenatal massage.
also look for prenatal yoga classes (some stretches are NOT good for you while pregnant)

unfortunately not too much. You can take 2 regular strenght tylenol every 4 hours. Take warm baths, use a heating pad. I have been there, done that. Feel Better Hun
And you can use a heating pad if it is not on your belly where baby is.

alternate heating packs and cold packs on your back. I had the same problem for 8.5 months and the heat really helps. Try staying off your feet and relaxing laying flat, I know its uncomfortable for awhile but it will help. Oh and Congratulations on you new little one.
