I see news articles where people are quoted or in the press release it has the phrase the word sic in parentheses (sic) -- what does that mean?

"Sic" is Latin for "thus." This little notation means, "Hey, I know this quote looks wrong, but it was that way when I found it, so don't blame me." Maybe the original text used archaic spelling or the original writer just messed up. But the person who's quoting that text is aware of the earlier mistake and wants you to know it.

[Sic] is shorthand for all that, at least to scholarly types.

Scott,

'sic' is latin and it is used to clarify that something that you are writing or reporting is not correct, but you are writiing it/reporting it just as it was said.

Lawyers use it a lot,
reporters as well, when they are reporting, and not giving their
opinion, LoL....

ex: i was just questioning his questioning to question (sic) and he went bezerk....

Hope this helps!

It means that is how the original work (written or spoken) was provided - spelling or grammatical errors were not corrected by the editor.

"sic" is Latin for thus, or so.

It means that the error (beside the sic) was in the original document that they were quoting.

It is an addition to a statement by the author, kind of like adding something to a quote.
