It is extremely tough to hypothesize at this point.

The sox have been much more consistent throughout the year, with few long losing streaks, while the yanks have played solid against good teams, but have also shown weakness against bad teams, a trait you don't want popping up going through a tight september race.

If the yankees injured players return, I believe they have the better shot...missing sheffield and matsui has hurt them a great deal, but their return would give the team a solid boost. The yankees have also played better against the AL East, something that will aid them in September, as there are more series against division rivals during that month.

The sox offense has been strong all season, which is no surprise, and has a slight edge over the yanks currently, in terms of OBP and slugging pct.

I would give the yankess the slight edge right now...winning the division by 4 or less games. It could be decided on Sept 15-17, when the teams meet for the last time. And don't count on both teams being in the postseason...it appears that the wild card will most likely come from the AL Central.

Do I hear John Sterling in the background..."The Yankees win, the Yankees win, thaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa YANKEES WIN!!!"

Put it this way...the AL Wild Card is most likely coming out of the Central, probably Chicago. The Yankees will win AL East. They are the only team in the league that could lose the amount of offensive firepower (two 100-rbi allstars) and defensive players leaving a team of young kids and still be only 1.5 games behind the division leading Red Sox. Every team loses to a bad team eventually, but the Yanks have a winning record over Boston right now, and they spanked both Detroit and the White Sox. I smell championship #27...

It's going to be the Bosox because the Yanks just can't seem get it together this year and the rest of the AL East can't compare to the two headed monster which is also the best rivalry in Baseball. Oh yeah, once the BOSOX win the AL East, the Yanks don't stand a chance to win the wild card either because the wild card will probably go to the White Sox or the Tigers this year.

But yeah, Go Oakland!

I will never ever call it early for the Yankees to win it. They even managed to steal it last year when it was a tie and there was all the talk about a one game playoff.

Red Sox AL East Champions

I think the Wildcard will come out of the AL Central

Still too early to tell...
Yankees need help right now, but with the injury to Wakefield, the Sox do also.

The real question is who's going to get the better help, and based on the players available for trade, I'd say Boston has the edge. Guys like a Manny Delcarmen could bring back a decent #4 or even #3 starter. New York doesn't have the same depth in their minor league system that Boston does.

I like the Yankees and here's why. They've been winning lately without Matsui and Sheffield in the lineup, and eventually they will both come back and the Yanks will be even better. They've been getting great stuff lately from Mussina and Johnson, and Rivera will always be automatic in the 9th inning. Plus you cant expect the Yanks to be quiet at the deadline. I'd look for them to land Abreu, Green, Soriano, or Sanders and maybe some pitchers.

And no, the Wild Card wont come from the East; it'll be the Tigers or the ChiSox. Whichever one loses the division.

The wild card comes out of the Central Division this year (for the first time).

Look at the standings....The Tigers have 64 wins!

Boston, who leads the East, doesnt even have 60 yet.

Boston wins the east, beats the white sox in the first round.

Detroit beats the west winner, and plays Boston for the ALCS.

Well yankeegirl...

I think ( and hope ) the Yankee Win The East. But I really think the Wild Card might just come out of the Central, but I would love to see the wild card come out the east... we'll have to wait and see long way to go...

Red Sox and unfortunately for you, I think the Wild Card will end up being the Tigers or the White Sox out of the Central.
