In many individual plans I've noticed it completely excludes maternity coverage, care, labor and delivery, etc.

because you are self employed, your CLAIMED income may be low enough to apply for low income aid. check with your local WIC (Women, Infants and Children) chapter and they can tell you what is available in your area.
if you do not qualify for those services or low income aid, your bill will be at least 13k (my experience with minimal insurance) and that was without an epidural (+1k) and using discounts by paying some things up-front. most hospitals will set up a bill pay system for your total cost (w/o insurance) or your deductible costs(w/ insurance). our hospital does - one year loans at 10% interest.
if you can qualify for a lower percentage rate credit card, get one and pay it off as quickly or quicker than the hospital loan.
i tried finding a new health insurance plan when i found out i was pregnant, and i could not find an insurance company that would cover any portion of a pregnancy as a pre-existing condition that was a better deal than just paying for our baby with up-front discounts and the minimal plan i had.
oh, also, if you are not yet pregnant and you are checking your options (way to go!), we have an HSA plan that allows us to save pre-tax dollars to be used for health costs. i.e. we put aside 100/mo and i can use it for anything from prescriptions to deductibles. you could start saving for your pre-natal/birth deductible before you even conceive.

Almost all insurance companies cover pregnancy, BUT if you are already pregnant they may not cover it until after 3 months of when the covereage begins, unless you had previous coverage. What ever you do stay away from Group Health insurance. They are routinely called Group Death!

Enroling in a new family plan or individual plan may not cover pre-existing conditions...there's usually a wait period for that.
Contact a broker and ask--unless you establish a corporation then name yourself as its employees, that might be the only chance that they would exclude pre-existing conditions. However, you need a lot of paperwork done for that, and well, it doesn't kick in until a few months as well.

Go through your local welfare department. You might not like being on public assistance, but they have many programs to cover prenatal care and medical coverage until the baby is 2 yrs old.
