I had a question similar to this at one point and here is the link I found helpful. I stopped using plastic bowls because of it. They say bacteria can grow in the crevices, perhaps that is aiding in the growth of algae.

Good luck.

Wow! I live in 100 degree of humidity in beautiful Florida....when was the last time you wash with hot water and soap the pet water bowls! Just a daily wash would suffice to get rid of any algae.

Once you've cleaned the bowl, you can buy some algae prevention drops from your local fish/pet store. Also, you might want to consider buying algae-eater fish or snails.

CLEAN WATER EVERY DAY 4 All PETS - THAT'S AN ORDER . CLEAN THE BOWL DAILY, TOO . USE STEEL WOOL on the inside - guaranteed to work . The soap-less kind is just fine . But be sure to rinse & wipe..... you don't wan't steel shavings in your pet's stomach .And give BOWSER a kiss on the mouth , too.
