I used to be a dancer for many many years, however I quit 5 years ago and am still interested in all types of dance. Does anyone know if they offer beginner adult lessons. Is it too late to return I am about 20 and have been away from it for almost 6 years. I also found my old pointe shoes and wanted to do that. Any suggestions on self teaching myself to go up on pointe again, on strengthing my ankles and what not? Thank you.

I definitely think you should go back to ballet. I started when I was 18 and I was on pointe when I turned 20. I suggest you take a least one ballet class before starting pointe again. There are tons of places out there that have adult ballet classes and because you've trained before, it'll all come back to you.

I suggest lots of releves if you want to strengthen your ankles. Maybe working with a teraband for flexibility.

Good Luck!

I don't recommend "self-teaching" pointe. I suggest enrolling in your local demi pointe class to strengthen your legs and ankles again. There are adult classes offered, check your local ballet company/school. But there are also instances when you should enroll in the level of technique that fits you, instead of basing it just on age. I also suggest doing your own strengthening exercises.

Please consult your teacher for their recommendations about going back up onto pointe. Also, you will need to purchase new equipment. Your feet change on a daily basis almost! Not necessarily the structure, but the elements. After 6 years, the structure of your foot has definently changed. Please do not attempt to put your old pointe shoes back on and dance in them.

I think with the proper strength, new pointe shoes and a refresher on technique, you'll do great!

I wouldn't try to go on pointes yourself but if you must the test for pointes is standing on releve in a passe. That means to stand on one foot on tippy toe with your hands up above your head and your other legs big toe on your knee. take an adult class in your area. Dont worry it will be fun. Let the teacher know you want to be on pointes again they will help if they are true dancers.

Your legs probably are not strong enough to support pointe right now. You will have to enroll in pre-pointe classes and have the teacher evaluate your current condition and how long it will take you to return to pointe.

it wouldnt be smart to *reteach* yourself. and yes, in most dance studios they do offer adult beg. classes. take a class! it would be good for you (and i know you know that!). So go ahead, do a city search and make phone calls, to see what studio offers it.

hope this helps!
