Because they don't want people to see what they look like? I use one because I rather talk to complete strangers then have them look at me. I use my real pictures when I'm talking to someone I really know. They can also be uncomfortable with their looks. Like me. :]

Some people, like myself, want privacy. While some people are asses when they answer questions but are punks and hide behind avatars so no one knows who they really are. Then, others may not have proper technology at home to do so.

Yeah I know, I never changed the picture, yet.

i switch all the time i think the avatars are fun it makes me feel like a kid, like when i played with barbies! i like to change the outfits and backgrounds. LOL
