Y own a condo townhouse that some fool had white Berber carpet installed. The professional steam cleaners could not get it clean. As a last resort I rented a "Rug Doctor", I used their chemicals and added "Oxy-Clean" to the mix, IT WORKED GREAT. I still have the same carpets 3 years later, and I clean them the same way every six months or so. Give it a try.

If you are renting a steam cleaner, ask about buying a brightener. You put it in the machine and it really restores the color. Some of the shampoos already have them built in. If you want to protect your carpet from it becoming dingy again, spray on a scotchguard after it dries. Most of them are gageous, so plan on an immediate evacuation once you are done for a couple hours until it dissapates.
I don't recommend oxy cleaner because it can take the color down a shade.

I think oxy clean sucks! Just rent a rug doctor or something like that and your carpet should be good as new
