to a 5 yr old is difficult because they will not understand that mommy and daddy will not be living together. All the PARENTS and ADULTS can do is act like PARENTS and ADULTS, to make it an easier transition on the child at hand, NEVER EVER bad mouth one another in the presence of the child do not be critical when the child is to return home from a visit with the other parent, be interested in how the visit went and try to be involved as much as possible with the child and ALWAYS be HONEST with them, they can pick up on negativity very easy...

Explain to the child that mommy and daddy will not be living together anymore and just answer whatever questions she/he may have from there. Don't answer anything that isn't asked. Believe me a 5 year old will speak his/her mind. And for goodness sake, don't ever, ever put the other parent down in front of that child. Remember, mommy and daddy are the most precious people in a child's life.

At that age it should be simple, just tell him the people whom are divorcing are not going to be living together anymore.
