Congress passes the laws that set the minimum wage. Because congress has not raised the minimum wage in over a decade, many states and cities have set their own higher minimum wages.
If you want the minimum wage increased, vote for representatives who support higher minimum wages.

When minimum wage was first tied into the prevailing wage, but that went by the wayside. Now it has to be raised by Congress. It hasn't been raised for 9 years. In fact indexed for inflation it is lower then it was in the 50's. There are several states that have a higher minimum wage then the federal wage. It's $7.50 an hour with a annual cost of living increase. It was voted on, not once but twice. And if you look back at when the wage was raised, the economy improved. That's because people had more money to spend. If anybody thinks that it is good where it is at, they should try to live on it, the experience would probably change your mind.

IT WON'T HELP!!!
Business that pay minimum wage to its workers will not allow an increase in minimum wage to eat into their profits. They will raise their prices to cover the added cost and the minimum wage earners still won't be able to afford the price of things that went up when their hourly wage went up. The poorest won't be helped, the middle class will be hurt, because their wages don't go up when minimum wage goes up, their wage just gets closer and closer to minimum wage and the prices went up, but not their salary...the only people who don't get hurt are the rich who don't feel the difference if their happy meal price goes up a dollar or two. GET IT?

Raising minimum wage will only raise prices more. What we need to do is stiop the cost of living increases that congressmen get.

The government determines minimum wage, but I don't know how they come up with their figures. It's been quite a few years since they raised it. It is $5.15 per hour. I don't know how they expect someone to live on this amount, it is outrageous.

They just tried to raise it but the republicans blocked it once again (why raise it when they can leave it where it is and get us to work some overtime to compensate and boost the economy, therefore, filling their pockets)
