To all the more advanced coders out there, I'd really like to start honing my skill, and practicing what I've learned though some simple projects. I'm having a bit of trouble thinking of some good ideas of programs that would help me out.

I'm pretty decent in VB.NET, and C++, as well as Flash MX 2004 (which is kind of cool for small games)

go to www.rentacoder.com or other sites like it - you will get real problems, real experience, build your resume and skills, and may even get paid a little (really a little).

What I would recommend is look for a real need. For instance, does anybody in your family collect stamps? or CDs? or have a video library they want to be able to keep track of? Then start with one of these needs. Don't start with something big like a game. That gets way too complex. Start with a simple program that meets a real-world need. Otherwise, there's no real way to test to see if it works the way you want it to.

Good luck.

Do a stock market program that downloads the daily close prices and stores them to your database, then you can do charts and all kind of stuff on it.

Create your own sim program.
