Bettas have extremely poor vision, he may be able to recognize the fact that a person feeds him, but not who.

Fish have a very short attention span, and very little memory to speak of. They do respond to classical conditioning. My bettas have learned to beg for food. (Flutter back and forth when I pass thru the hall.) Also all my bettas, and other fish know what it means when I open the lid of their tank. (Note my male bettas are loners in their tanks.) If your 11 year old is the one who feeds it it wouldn't amaze me if the betta reacts differently to him/her.

Note I'm not a big proponent of young children feeding fish. As they tend to over feed, and/or forget to feed the fish. (Not that us adults are much better.) Be sure you and your child understand that a betta always eats like he's starving. The betta only needs to be fed once a day a very small amount. Also the bowl/tank needs to be cleaned on a weekly basis.

yes beta's actually have more personality than common fish. they know when it's time for food and defineltey know their owner. in fact beta's can be taught tricks like jumping out of the water (usually about two inches). remember to keep the top of the tank covered because they will jump out.

Yes. As for knowing there owner, yes and no. If the fish has a curved tank, it blurs the fish's vision, and all it sees is blurs. But the main thing that it knows that if someone comes close to it, its probably going to get food.

I don't know about their memory, etc... I'm sure they have some form of memory. My betta's know the when i lightly tap the bowl they will be getting food so they rush to the surface. I'd doubt they can recognize people, and if they can mine must hate me because he always flares his gills at me when i put my face up lol.

fish only have a 2 second memory span - this is why they can be kept in such a small tank - they think they are checking out new territory every time they turn around

Bettas have a memory and they don't recognise their owner, whoever go near the tank, mean it time for feeding.
