can be a number of things either software related or hardware related - the trick is to find out what it is

Firstly boot into safe mode - when you start up keep on pressing the f8 or f5 key

Leave it in safemode for a while and does it still switch off - if yes maybe pointing towards hardware problem

now restart back into windows normally - click run then type - shutdown /a

now gotot the control panel - then adminstrative tools > then event viewer
click on the left application - look for any errors - this may give you a clue - maybe a application that is hanging or throwing out a code that maybe causing your computer to shut down

also check in the system - look for some errors - best doing this when your system has shut down

If you system shuts down and restarts - windows has got a option that automatically does this and does not show a error message - to stop this right click on my computer - then properties > then advanced > click on the option for system start up and system failure - uncheck the option for automatic restart

now when your computer restarts windows should throw out a error message - write down this error message and put this stop code in google - this can give you clues to what is going on

Obviously do the scans for spyware etc etc

If you have tried all of the above you may have a hardware error - this could be your cpu getting to hot - your fan maybe running slow - or you heat sync maybe failing

hope this helps

This could be related to a virus. Is it a Dell, by any chance? I've noticed that Dells turn off randomly. At least that's my experience with some.

It might be your cooling system. Are your airways blocked? Try to keep your computer vented, and clean it every once in a while. Maybe it overheats and shuts down. That happens a lot.

If it's virus related, try downloading these three applications and run them in the order I have them (best to do this in safe mode):

Stinger
AdAware
Spybot Search and Destroy

Good luck to you and your comp.

If it really shuts down the Windows way you might have caught a virus. If it just switches off without the typical Windows moves you might have a hardware problem with your net switch

Well if it is as if you are pulling the plug and the power just instantly goes, it is not a virus, it is a hardware problem. Overheating is likely, faulty power supply units can also sometimes be to blame, but if the computer is new it is less likely to be.

Does it shut down at the same stage of the same program?
If it is, then the cause is the program.

If its random, it maybe a virus.
Do a online scan, http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_pcc.asp

Does it shut down at a certain time? This could mean a software problem or the CPU overheating.

Overheating.
A modern computer chip will allow itself to get to a specific temp and then shutdown. PC chips are incredibly resilient and they cool down quite quickly which allows you to restart but it heats up again to that magic number and ...... shut down. Install an app like Mother Board Monitor (http://mbm.livewiredev.com) and check. New fans are between £5 - £25 (without being silly) and are dead easy to fit.

It's either going to be a virus or your processor overheating. Get a good virus checker like norton, ensure its fully updated and do a scan. If this does not fix the problem then it must be your processor overheating, probably due to a faulty fan.

Sounds like you have a virus or a perhaps a power supply problem,

I'd try running a virus scan firs.

A very good abnd FREE anti virus program is AVAST!

i actually just bought a new puter and had a similiar problem - it would reboot on its own in the middle of the night!

and what was happening was it was set to automatically download 'updates' and then if i didn't tell it to not reboot, it would automatically do it after 5 minutes. maybe its something like that?

chip could be getting too hot, check the fans to make sure they are working properly
