What enflamed the recent fighting (as in what happened 8-9 days ago)? 2 Israeli soldiers were kidnapped by an independant terrorist organization known as Hezbollah (Party of God).

The root causes go back 60+ years (and further) to when Israel was first created out of Palestine (without asking any Palestinians) after WW II.

After Israel was created the Arab nations in the area tried to take the land back but were defeated (with help) and Israel took more land leaving Palestine with just the West Bank and Gaza. People, after seeing that direct military conflict won't work, because it will just bring in the US, decided to fight the only way they had left, terrorism (don't get me wrong, I think this is a horrible way to fight, I'm just giving you the actual reasons for it, not justifying it). this is also one of the main reasons Arab people hate America so much.

This caused Israel to retaliate by attacking Palestine, and the attacks have just gone back and forth since.

Knowing all this you will see also why Iran has made claims that the Holocost didn't happen and was just an excuse to create Israel, and most of the other random craziness in the area.

Actually Israel is not fighting with Lebanon. It is trying to root out the islamic militants/terrorists who operate from there. It began when a couple of Israeli soldiers were kidnapped and Israel insisted they be released. That just wasn't going to happen and things exploded. Unfortunately there have been a lot of civilians caught up in the drama. So what's new?

you really don't know?

After the 1948 Arab-Israeli conflict, Lebanon became home to more than 110,000 Palestinian refugees from their homes in present day Israel

On 10 July 1981, after a period of peace, violence erupted in South Lebanon. According to the U.N. Secretary-General, the Israeli air force bombarded Palestinian targets in south Lebanon, and later that day Palestinian elements fired artillery and rockets into northern Israel. However, according to the Federal Research Division of the Library of Congress, "Israel responded to PLO rocket attacks on northern Israeli settlements by bombing PLO encampments in southern Lebanon. There was no official armastice at the end of this conflict.

The 2006 Arab-Israeli conflict began in June 2006 as a series of attacks between Hamas militants and the State of Israel. This situation escalated into an invasion of the Gaza Strip by the IDF, and two weeks later a "second front" opened in Lebanon with Hezbollah militants, tacitly supported by Syria and Iran

As an apparent response to, or copycat of, the situation in Gaza, Hezbollah kidnaps two Israeli soldiers on July 12, 2006. This is the start of 2006 Israel-Lebanon crisis: an offensive and air/sea blockade against Lebanon as a punitive action for that government's "failure to control Hezbollah." Shelling occurs on both sides: militants launch rockets against Haifa, Tiberias, and Israeli naval vessels; Beirut, Hezbollah centers, and the Lebanese highway network are systematically bombed by IDF

Israel has been holding prisoners allegedly suspected of terrorist activities. The Hezbollah, in an attempt to induce Israel to free those prisoners, kidnapped 2 Israeli soldiers. Instead of negotiating with terrorists, Israel sent its army into Lebanon, where the Hezbollah operates.

Israel had plans to invade Lebanon so it did before, not just to release the 2kidnapped soldiers ,but Israel took the chance to broaden the conflict to seduce Syria and Iran to enter the war and that`s what U.S.wants(stratigic allied with Israel)to get rid of both of them as it did in Iraq.Lebanon has no army and Hesbollah is the only resistance there.there`re thousands of prisoners,Lebanese and Palestineans in Israel, and there`s no other way to set them free except this way.Israel thought it`s an easy task but it drowned in the Lebanese swamp as The Americans did in Iraq and Israel`s forces couldn`t take 1cm of Lebanon and Israeli generals confessed that they were surprised with Hesbollah`well-trained fighters and didn`t expect that it`s rockets will reach and burn major cities in Israel in response to mass- destruction of most lebanese cities and even the civilians`s houses and ambulances.

I heard that two Israeli soldiers were captured by a terrorist group in Lebanon. Its tough to say if that is the true motive for this attack, but they are close to invading the country. I think that's its part of the presidents agenda in going after terrorist groups in the region. It would not surprise me if Syria were involved in some sort of conflict with Israel, or the UN with in the next two years.

That fight is actually between Israel and Hezbollah not Lebanon. Hezbollah kidnapped 2 Israeli soldiers from the northern border.

Isreal is not fighting Lebanon. They are fighting the terriost group Hesbolla (formed by Iran in 1982). Hesbolla is in Lebanon and Lebanon is not strong enough to force them out. Hesbolla arwe funded and supplied by Iran and Sirya. Which should both be taken out!

Hesbolla kidnapped two Israli soldiers so Isreal attacked them.
