I think of how a small Turkish principality in Asia Minor during the 13th century was to become the terror of Christendom nearly two hundred years later:

Mehmed II who captured Constantinople in 1453.

Selim I who won defeated the Mameluke's of Egypt and took control of the Holy cities of Mecca and Medina

Suleiman the Magnificent who laid siege to Vienna in 1529, conquered parts of eastern Europe, and took Baghdad from the Safavid Empire.

In the end I am down-hearted, thinking of its peoples' hopes and dreams, and what may have been if it existed today.
