My answer is a big NO. My former fiancee use to say that she lied coz she love me so much and did not want to hurt my feeling.
But lies are often cover with another lie. When found out it hurts more. Open and be frank is better for me.

No. If you cannot avoid lying by changing the subject then be honest without being mean.

yes i guess..... but like 1st ask urself....in such situations wud u prefer the truth or a lie....can the person handle the truth...??
