President Bush addressed the NAACP and he said that racism still exists in America http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060720/ap_on_go_pr_wh/bush_naacp . When you are at home or work or someplace where there are not minorities, how often do you hear other people make prejudiced comments about minorities? Do most people just nod in agreement when somebody spouts off about minorities or do other people stand up and defend minorities in their absence? Most people have sense enough to stay quiet when there are minorities in earshot, but what types of things do you hear when it's just you and family or friends?

How often...I dunno..maybe 8 or 10 times a day....you don't seem to realize that prejudice isn't always verbal...it occurs in many forms......

We live in a small town in Eastern Oregon, with a 50% native american population. Prejudice is rampant here, although I'm unsure why if people are prejudiced against native americans that they do not live in a "more white" town. Even my husband's work, is prejudiced. They hire minorities to fulfill a requirement, not as a favoritism thing. The next town over, which is a little bigger, there is a native and spanish population, and very few blacks. I grew up in california which is known for it's diversity. While it is that way in a comparitive context with other states, prejudice still exists. Members of my family will still say things about "wetbacks' "hmongs" and the like.
A lot of it comes down to that age old sociological problem "scapegoating" where it's easy to target and blame one group for societal problems.

A lot of people who are considered prejudiced nowadays, are not. So in one sense I would say that I don't encounter people who "say it like it is" often enough.
On the other hand, I encounter people who are trully prejudiced quite often. I have a relative that is quite open about the fact that he can't stand a certain race. That person wasn't invited at my wedding. To some degree I understand him because he was shot by a person of that race, and survived, but to paint the whole race with the same brush because of one a few bad guys, that's not right.
Some of the people who are prejudiced are just misinformed. They don't know the whole story, and they've been brainwashed by certain groups and now they're showing their "righteous anger" while the true story is nothing like they've been told. I don't believe they're innocent either. We have the responsibility of getting ourselves informed and research both sides of a subject before we point fingers at one side.

There are all kinds of prejudices. I am overweight. I experience it all the time.

I am a white American, but live in a predominantly hispanic neighborhood. One day a car pulled in front of my house waiting to pick someone up that lives across the street. Just as I was looking out to see who pulled up, I saw them throw a bag of fast food trash on the sidewalk in front. I went outside to ask them to please not do that, and the young woman in the passenger seat said, "shut up, White Trash!"

So, just remember, no matter what anyone says, there is prejudice against ALL people. I don't believe there are minorities in America any more.
