Run both Ad-aware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/) and Skybot (http://www.safer-networking.org/) to remove any spyware. Run both as one may caught something the other missing. Then go to microsoft.com and download Defender to protect against future infections.
Hey, they are free. If they don't work, then spend the money. But I have found them both better than the paid ones.

paying for one is a lot better in scanning and deleting rather than the free ones, but the free ones are fine enough
over a course of 1 year or so, you will probably have missed about 6000 spywares though

Ad-Aware is a good spyware remover it doesn't get every single thing but it get the most important stuff and its Free

I agree with "dewcoons". Except that I run Ad-aware and the Microsoft anti-spyware (free on microsoft.com) together. I haven't had any problems since using these.

There is a really good free one called ewido.
It is made by Grisoft. Do a google search for
ewido free edition and find their page.

I messed up my laptop this way and tried to use the free ones, in the end I had to buy Norton, Cost a lot but fixed the laptop.

The free ones are ok, but you need a good one. I would use the free one until you had a chance to buy one.

nah, the free ones are fine. you get a few extra cool features with the paid ones, but the free ones get the job done. i use windows defender from microsoft.

my huble opinion, i rather pay for one is always beter but try to get a good one. plus is always good to have the little thing call technical support LOL
