For home use. Low volume, but I'd like excellent photo quality printing and reliability. HP makes so many different models I'm dizzy. And are the Canon's better at photos? It should be a nice looking, smaller machine if possible, and reasonably fast. Which models should I consider for under $400ish)

The HP Photosmart 3310 is the best machine on the market for photos right now. It also has scan, fax, copy, and regular printing. It takes 6 ink cartridges that give you a much better color variation than the 4 ink systems out there. Ink is wonderfully inexpensive. You can buy all 6 cartridges and 150 sheets of 4x6 photo paper in a pack for $36.99. However, this machine will cost you near $400. This is a total photo machine though. It has a 3 inch LCD screen that lets you edit your photos, it has a built in slide/negative adapter so that you can print pictures from your slides or negatives. And the photos turn out really nice, better than Wal-Mart. It also has Bluetooth, for wireless connectivity with enabled cell phones, PDAs, etc.

Any HP will do fine on photos, just make sure that it uses new Vivera inks, as most all of the new models do. The HP 6310 was mentioned in an earlier answer, and this would be a good choice.

Really, I wouldn't recommend any brand other than HP. Canon is ok, but HP has been found to be more reliable and longer lasting.

Many answerers to your question have recommended printers that don't have fax like the HP C3180 or the HP 1410. If you don't need fax, these are cheap printers that do ok.

HP all the way, however I don't recommend an Inkjet printer because the ink cartridges cost too much. The yield isn't that great and will really get into your wallet. I recommend the laser printers because the supply cost in the long term is much less.

I have two HP all-in-ones which I picked up for -- ready for this -- $49.50. For home use I don't know what more you could want. Saw them advertised in our Sunday paper and couldn't turn them down. Actually needed two like a hole in the head. I have the HP 1210 and HP1425. The 1210 is a top load -- just flip the lid and scan. Quality suits me fine.

Ha! I had the same problem. I have a hp officejet 4215 (all in one) but it is not that great for photos, so I also have a cannon pixima ip 4200for my photos and it takes about 40 sec for a great 4x6. You are gonna have to decide what is more important...I couldn't find an all-in one that was great for photos too. Hope this helps!!

Epson usually does a good job with both photos and text. A color laser like the HP 3600 series is also a good alternative.

I use a Canaon PIXMA MP130 - excellent print quality, cheap ink (important to me) and small footprint on the desktop. It comes with some excellent scanning tools as well. Inexpensive also.
