Would you follow anything your leader said or would you choose to lay down the arms and think for yourself and say no Im not going to do that and I dont want anyone to do that, pick up the child and give it back to its mother?
I wonder if any of the most brainwashed people in the world, Nazi's, thought of that when they were told to do just this.
Hitler taught them from childhood that other groups of people are not human beings and do not deserve to live.
From childhood many countries and religions teach their children to hate. Hate Americans, hate this group or that group, its ok to kill each other.
Are human beings capable of free thought, or do they want to believe what they are told?

Well that is the key thing. Being Human. I don't think any reasonable and prudent person would kill a child simply because they were told to do it.That's just nuts.
If you were born into a cannibalistic tribe then eating people would be normal and not eating people would be wrong
What I do believe however, is that people are programed by outside influences and peer pressure and many other factors and they form an opinion of what is right or wrong.
That is called learned behavior And becomes normal behavior to that society and in most cases every day practice.
Humans are very capable of free thought as you have proven by posting this question and others have by answering it. They may not be the answers you are looking for but they are answers just the same.
People will always hate. Some more then others and some for good reason and some with very little reason if any at all..

It's easy to look back and simplify it. Group violence is infecting. The regime was very clever in the way the manipulated people, particularly those in charge of the killing. I did an experiment with a class of mine. I divided it into the favored and the unfavored group. The favored group picked up on isolating the unfavored group right away. They even told kids in the school yard after lunch that the others were not to be played with. If it could be that easy in a morning with far less propaganda, I can imagine how quickly it caught on in Nazi Germany. What we would or would not do now could be far different if we, or our family were also in danger.

To a point I want to believe what I am told but not the thing about hate and anger. I choose to believe that there is good in everyone just bad cirumstances that put them where they are now with no way to change. I also want to believe that if people are taught a different way they can learn and change to be better people. I know a little naive but hey somebody has to have hope for the human race.
Oh yeah and there is no way I would shot a little kid.

No, I would not shoot a child. Any leader that would require that would not be a good perosn to follow.
Humans ARE capable of free will, but they can also be brainwashed into thinking just about anything. Also, the weak-minded are easily led.

You are speaking about things that you do not understand and your comments are following the politically correct brainwashed rhetoric that has caused the death of thousands of Americans soldiers in Vietnam and all conflicts from that day to the present day.
Get on the porch if you don't want to fight. Stay out of the way and do not protest the war like ms Fonda, who has now begged for forgiveness for her stupid actions during the Vietnam war and treasonous statements and deeds.

Depends on the leader and the child. I wouldn't even venture to commit myself to an answer on such a question without a complete look at the facts of the situation.

Isn't this a great point you made?
Why not eliminate elements of war and let it be an end to tyranny and oppression! Except for the fact that those holding guns are so brainwashed to kill innocent children.

self-righteous indignation is a luxury for those who's never been forced to decide between self-preservation or the lesser of evils.
free thought and free will, the chasm is sometimes too great to reconcile but very easy to judge in retrospect and in terms of theory.
and questioning... be it authority, established "truths", etc. ...enevitably brings ridicule and contempt, even if it later leads to a "truth" or proof.
are human being capable? of course. but, rarely does any one dig beyond the tertiary.
