Hi,
When you hired on, were you given a job description?
If you did not get one, or he has said nothing to suggest he thinks you are lazy, you are probally laying a self imposed guilt trip on yourself.
Sometimes we can be our own worse enemys, and nothing is ever as bad as we imagine it to be.
If you like your job and want to stay with the company, approach him and explain that you do your best at filing, and was wondering what else you could do to be of service to the company. Explain to him that you feel like you could contribute more. This will make you a star in his eyes, and could lead to a raise and possibly learning more about the brokerage business and allow you to perhaps do some on the job training, and perhaps one day get your broker license. Real estate is a highly lucritive business to be a part of. Sounds like a great career to pursue and I commend you on your high code of ethics that makes you feel the way you do about it. If he does not tell you, I will tell you that you are definetly not lazy.
Good luck to you,
Darryl S.

I work for my family, a small office. I work but I think I can work much harder if I want to. But most of time I just want to finish whatever on my desk today and prepare to go home. And I get bored if there is not much things to do. Then I will browse on the internet. I don't really like the idea of being passive and unproductive, but it is like I burn out my everyday's energy portion very quickly, which makes me don't want to do more after finish whatever need to be done the day. There are days I feel very energic and start many projects but then stop most of them whenever I am not evergic. I don't have persistence on many things. But anyway, I would say this : get a job you like the most, and you will be able to enjoy it more and less bored! Good luck

Why not take a long term view of this?
Maybe you can use the time to learn more about the field that you're working in to develop a wider range of skills. For example, propose special projects to improve office procedures (you'll learn alot about the business this way!), ask to cross train in other jobs so that you become versatile and handle other jobs when a co-worker is absent, go on client calls with your boss to learn his or her job.
Consider taking a course in your field and ask your boss to mentor you. Maybe your boss will give you on-the-job study time. You'll be able to see how what your studying applies to the business in real time!
You'll be showing your boss that you're interested and motivated and if an interesting project or job opens up, you'd have a much better chance of being selected or promoted.
You can use your down time to develop general career building skills and to advance in this career in particular.

When you are finished with your work and have finished e-mailing all of your friends, ask him if there is anything he needs you to do or perhaps a project for you to work on, ie marketing, sales calls, organizing etc...

Well, you can always ask for more work. Ask him if he needs help in other stuff. That way, he will think you are more proactive and willing to do more and not lazy.

Keep asking him for something to do.
Or, you could spend time researching something that is applicable to work. Or clean (my least favorite).
And I so know how the internet is just distracting!!!!!
PS - I'm bored too.
