Ouch. This could be related to a virus or perhaps a battery issue (since it's a laptop). Is it a Dell, by any chance? I've noticed that Dells turn off randomly. At least that's my experience with some. Make sure your battery is fully charged, and watch it closely. Does your computer turn off when the battery reaches a certain percentage?
If your computer is old, and you have not changed the battery, it might be that. Perhaps if you know someone with the same battery, you could try theirs in your comptuer and see if it works.
Also, laptops don't have a very good cooling system. Are your airways blocked? Try to keep your computer vented, and move it every once in a while. Maybe it overheats and shuts down. That happens a lot.
If it's virus related, try downloading these three applications and run them in the order I have them (best to do this in safe mode):
Stinger
AdAware
Spybot Search and Destroy
Good luck to you and your comp.

If you use the laptop just sitting on your lap without a tray or one of those little laptop desks under it, then you may be blocking air vents on the bottom that circulate air and keep the computer cool. When they overheat, they shut off randomly because they can't keep working without air circulation. Another thing may be the power source or the jack in the computer itself; the one on mine broke and I had to take it in to be fixed. There are a multitude of answers to this question--I'd suggest taking it in to a computer place, like the Geek Squad or somewhere, to have it checked out.

Does it turn off even if its plugged into mains power? If its on mains, and the battery is bumped off does nevertheless turn off? once you're saying "turn Off", do you mean the operating device shuts down wisely, or does it merely bypass useless immediately? Batteries are in basic terms sturdy for some hundred cycles i have self belief, so in case you drained it and charged it daily for 2 years, i'd not be suprised if the battery became nearing the accurate of its existence. examine the battery meter (homestead windows XP meter or the only which got here which include your laptop software/drivers) to work out how charged it is and what situation it is in. in case you battery has somewhat button on it with lights, charge it up, then examine to work out that each and each one the lights remove darkness from (examine manuals for precisely what the lights mean, regularly charge and/or situation). examine that the fan is going and that air is popping out the "exhaust" once you turn the laptop on. you'll locate CPU temp reporting approaches on the internet. If the CPU temp is over about 60 tiers celcius, you're maximum likely in difficulty (esp if the fan isn't blasting out air). some followers in basic terms come on at the same time as they experience a particular temp, so in case you are able to save it operating lengthy sufficient you are able to make certain if this occurs.

Either the battery is low, or your have some sort of virus. Charge it real well. If that doesn't work get McAffe and search your computer for viruses. After this some unwanted files may appear, delete them all.

Is it the battery? If you're not using it and it is on, it still uses battery power. So plug it in.
Another option is the battery is not holding a charge anymores so a new battery might be the option.

Sounds like battery problems to me too. How old is it? Have you tried a different battery? Does it do it when it's plugged into the charger? Process of elimination my friend...

This could be an overheating problem. Are you running anything strenuous when it shuts down? This is common with laptops... See my previous answer to someone with the same question.
