I have actually owned many tortoises ranging from large Aldabras to small indian star tortoises. I moved, so had to give up the collection and gave them all good homes. I managed to keep one - an African Leopard tortoise.
I must say they can hustle! They are capable of moving very quickly, especially when they are out in the open. They like to get in the shade and get under things. Once they are in a happy place, they just sit there.
They are not slow all of the time - it's by choice.
