51/2 = 25.5
71/2 = 35.5
so find the square that = 25.5
and 35.5
before you find the square of half a number you should try to make it a whole number first
you know that 5 squared = 25 so the first one would be around 5.3 to 5.6 it is actually 5.04
you know that 6 squared is 36 so 5.5 would be around 5.9 to 35.8 it is actually 5.95
somewhere around there. i didnt do any real mathamadical functions to come up with the estimations. but the answer was done by calculator

you change the 51/2 to 5.5 and 7 1/2 to 7.5 and then multiply them. 5.5x7.5 =41.25 or

41 1/4.

SF of walls = perimeter of floor x height
SF of floor or ceiling = Lgth x Width
Example room: 5'-6 x 7'-6" x 8' high (floor to ceiling)

sf of walls = (2x5.5) + (2x7.5) x 8
sf of walls= (11 + 15) x 8
sf of walls = 26 x 8
sf of walls= 208 sf

Sf of ceiling= 5.5 x 7.5 Therefore ceiling sf is = 41.25 or 42sf
sf of floor= the same as the ceiling therefore it = 42 sf
For most decorating purposes what material is placed on the wall is placed on the ceiling so the sf of the rooms walls and ceiling (eg. for painting purposes) is 208 sf + 42 sf= 250 sf.
Whew! Class is dismissed.
