Metropolitan, or metropolis which is a city. The abbreviated form of the word has come to mean many things including a subway system (i.e: NYC) or a local newspaper.
Metro can also refer to a straight man who dresses trendily and takes care of his appearance.

For example, if a guy dresses really hip and in style but is straight, he looks metro (where he could be either gay or straight)- because generally gay men care more about their appearance - this is harder to explain than I thought it would be. hee hee ;)
