Its not really bad for the car. Its just that the pump will start to recycle the gas. The hose is a double tube mechanism that sucks back the fumes as you pump the gas in. Once the tank is full and the nozzle clicks, it starts to take back the fuel that you think you are pumping into the car.

It's dangerous, unhealthy, and potentially deadly.

The click is the result of a sensor that detects gasoline near the filler tube (i.e., a "full" condition). It shuts the pump off so that gas doesn't spill out, messing up the finish of the car, causing fumes to be inhaled, and potentially catching fire or even causing an explosion.

When the pump shuts off, return the hose to the pump. What could be more simple than that?

The click tells you that your take is getting full. You can keep going for a little bite to round out the amount to the next whole dollar amount. If you to far the worst thing that will happen is you will spill gas on the ground. Depending on the car's tank size the longer before you spill gas. Just take it slow and if it keeps clicking stop you are about to spill.

the click means that the nozzle of the gas pump has sensed the fuel is about to "back-up" or spill onto the ground. it is safe for you to continue to the nearest dollar. its not bad for your car to do that but it does suck when you spill gas all over the place.
