Lord of the Rings in book form (atleast orginally) wasnt a trilogy at all, but one book with 3 sections which later was printed often as 3 books and thus 3 movies.
Star Wars (the orignal) can be considered a trilogy, so there isnt a real comparison in my mind between the 2.

The Lord of the Rings
star wars has 6 movies and therefore cannot be a true trilogy. Lucas first released star wars 4-6 and then 1-3. he did this with purpose.

Well, since Star Wars isn't a true trilogy meaning just 3 then I would have to say The Lord of the Rings.

LotR, definitely. It is a masterpiece that will be remembered as a true classic in the future. So much work went into it and it's clear from the effort put in by the team that it was made by people who really do love the books.
The original 'Star Wars' trilogy are enjoyable but, at times, the dialogue is a bit childish. Also, the dire prequels have almost ruined the name of 'Star Wars'.

The Lord of The Rings. Star Wars is considered, now at least, a saga of six films. The Lord of The rings Has a way cooler story, and it's just better!

LOTR is a true trilogy. The Star Wars series was setup similar to a saturday matinee serial like Buck Rogers or The Lone Ranger. That is why the first movie was episode 4. It was suppose to be like you came into the theater one saturday having not seen the first three episodes.

Well, when people say "trilogy" I think they mean the first set of Star Wars movies because Tolkien wasn't quite so commercialized yet.
