I moved from CA to Houston. As far as jobs, they are fairly abundant here......what are your professions? Housing is VERY affordable in Houston, especially in comparison to California. Do you know what part of Houston you are moving to? The suburbs are quite inexpensive and of course the city is much higher cost of living but again, you will feel like everything here is cheap compared to what you are used to in CA. You have two dogs? Well we have dog parks galore in Houston! Feel free to email me with specific questions anytime! sleefuller@yahoo.com
Oh and FYI, there is plenty to do, the answers you are getting are not from people who live here......you will also notice that people in TX are much nicer and a lot more hospitable than just about anywhere in the US.....remember, I am from CA and am happy in Houston......

I live in Houston and I love it here. There are plenty of jobs, the housing is affordable, there is lots to do. Anyone who says otherwise is a moron who isn't from Houston and just likes hating on others. Don't listen to them. My suggestion is to find a nice suburb area to live. The housing will be cheapier, the schools are better (if you ever plan on having kids) and its nice to be a little out of the city but if you want city life it is only a small drive away. Plus Houston is close to many other great vacation spots: for a short day trip, try Keemah or Galveston. If you are going for a long weekend, try Corpus, Padre Island, San Antonio, Dallas, Austin, New Orleans just about anywhere in Texas and Louisiana you feel like going. Houston has plenty to offer. And Texans are much more friendly and hospitable than most of the US. About the only down side is that yes there is a lot of Traffic but after awhile you start to learn shortcuts that make traveling across town much faster. Good luck on your move and welcome to Houston!

My husband and I just bought a home in Clear Lake in March, it's a 3/2/2 with new updates and paid about 100k for it. We also have a lab, and a 1 year old daughter, there is plenty of things for them to do in Houston like nice parks to walk them in, there is a store here called Petco and you can bring your animals in the store. There is usually a lot open once you get a job you stay there for a while, but once you are looking it can take a while to find another one depending on your location. You can check out www.monster.com to look up jobs while you are in CA to get an idea. I had a friend that moved from CA and she says it is like triple the cost of everything over there compared to here.

If you can't find a good job here in Houston, you aren't trying! There is loads of opportunity. And housing is very inexpensive compared to the rest of the U.S. My husband and I just bought a brand new, 3,600 sq. ft., 5 bedroom house in a neighborhood that sits next to a lake for $ 259,000. Try to find that deal any where else! Of course, we live out in Seabrook, which is about 20 miles South of Houston. It's better, especially if you are considering ever starting a family, to live outside of the actual city. Most people commute to work because the better paying jobs are in Houston.
I don't know what to tell you about the pets. I'm not a pet owner, but I know the majority of people around here are and could give you advice on that.

The refineries are quite often in Pasadena, l. a. Porte, close to the bay area. Houston is like 20 minutes from those. Houston residing is somewhat costly and the taxes are additionally. Daycare is particularly decrease priced and the lazy people who dont choose to artwork (sounds like that's not ya'll) get NCI. The bay area is valuable. l. a. Porte, and so on. in simple terms comprehend the refineries are actually not fairly in Houston. The headquarters/company places of work may well be yet not the actual refinery. in case you're tight on money, the only element you will have the skill to handle to pay for is a condo domicile or an condominium it fairly is particularly junky. I truthfully have a house on the marketplace or lease in case you have an activity in the NW area of city. very valuable, affordable domicile.

I moved from San Diego to a suburb in Houston. California is my home. Texas is OK, if you like humidity. Everyone is right about the home prices, its very affordable. But I will never live in texas again because its just not for me

It's more humid than California, it's takes about a year to get use to this climate, but it's still an ok place to live.
Their are parks all over the place for the dogs to go. Their are plenty of jobs here. Bosses are bosses no matter where you are. People are friendly here, unlike California, people will talk to you, without knowing you, all you have to do is ask if you need him and people will come and help.
Home prices are three times cheaper here than California, so your money will go alot farther.

The things I know about Houston from visiting there.
1.) Homes are cheaper, but estate taxes are incredibly more expensive than Cali.
2.) Its dirty as hell, Tijuana has cleaner air.
3.) Jobs are around, but there are tons of illegal immigrants, even more than Cali.
4.) There is just about nothing to do unless you like to eat chili, watch football or bbq in the HEAT!

Regarding the bad comments about traffic. Any big city is going to have a lot of traffic...duh! The layout of freeways & feeder streets are better than any other big city. Its easy to get around from one place to another and of course rush hour is bad any place that is a halfway decent size of a prosperous town. Don't let them scare you. I've lived in northern, southern & central Calif. so I know about traffic; Houston layout is better; roads aren't quit as good though...many potholes.
Weatherwise....we don't have earthquakes, mudslides, forest fires to speak of, etc. Its nice to go out at 2 am to walk the dog and not have to put on long pants, a jacket, etc. ... but we can't open our windows at night as there is no cool breeze. But who leaves their windows open at night in a big city? You have to go with the flow and adjust accordingly. Every place you go has its pros and cons so you just accept it the way it is and you'll fit in.
