I think you need a lot of practice before you race someone, especially if you've just learned how to drive a stick.

What kind of car do you have? All-wheel, Front-wheel or rear-wheel drive? That makes a huge difference with your launch. Rear-wheel you need to not smoke the tires and then nail it as soon as you've hooked up. Front-wheel drive requires you to roll the power on gradually as any sudden weight shift will cause you to smoke your tires. All-Wheel, Just nail it hard and hang on.

Shifting fast is a skill that takes years to perfect and the consequences of a missed shift can be quite severe. My dad swears that you HAVE to double-clutch but I've never been able to shift crisply using this technique. If you plan on racing a lot, racing clutches and short-throw shifters make a huge difference.

And as the previous poster said, shift by feel. You need to know your car to get the most out of it. Some cars don't need to be taken all the way to redline to be the fastest, where does your car build the most power? Keep it close to that range as much as possible and you'll be fast.

Again, practice, practice, practice and I hope you have a good mechanic because racing is hard on your car.

Good luck

Roll into the Tree. Shift by sound & feel, instead of looking at the Tach. Make sure that all four tires are straight. A lot of people don't realize that if the tires are all not straight, your launch will go squirrely. I used to race at Fremont (CA) Raceway. I used to hang in the pits with my Dad. The guys liked ther fact that I was a girl who loved racing. I learned from the best...Prudhomne, Wood, Garlits!

Don't do it your going to lose..
Even if you have a fast car...

Drag racing isn't all about who's faster,it has alot to do with your hole Shot

Just try when jumping off the line, don't floor the car til it gets moving alittle(half throttle)(5--10 feet) That is if your car is muscled up and fast
if you have a slow car Floor the H**l out of it and pray your buddy breaks down before
finish the line
