A couple of people have said this already, but it is a bit confusing. The most venomous snake (i.e the one with the most lethal average venom yield) is the Inland Taipan, also known as the Fierce snake, Western taipan or Small-scaled snake. It can even be found listed under two different genera, either as Oxyuranus microlepidota or Parademansia microlepidota. If lives in a largely uninhabited part of Australia and has an LD50 (lethal dose for 50 out of 100 laboratory mice) of 0.010 mg/kg compared with the King Cobra which is 1.9 mg/kg. It has a maximum recorded venom yield of 110 mg, which means that it can kill over half a million mice, or a single 10 ton mouse with a single bite. If you ever get monstered by a 10 ton mouse, hope that you have a Fierce snake nearby.

the snake with the most potent venom is the banded sea krait, however it's temperment is fairly docile, there for it is not as dangerous, and they are extremely hard to stumble upon. The Taipan from Australia, and the Fer-De-Lance from central/south America are tied as the top of the snakes which have extremely potent venom and a high risk of strike. The king cobra and the black mamba (which is more potent and aggressive than the green mamba) are extremely aggressive, more so than the taipan or the fer-de-lance, and they're poison is close in toxicity, however the two previous are slightly higher, however, I believe the King Cobra is tagged as having caused the most deaths annually.
so there ya go. If you are interested in poisonous snakes there is a fairly interesting book out called 'snakebite survivors club'. I thought it was fascinating

On Land it is the Inland taipan of Australia. Apparently, Australia has the top ten of the most venomous snakes in the world!! Here's the entire list of those wonders:
http://arachnophiliac.co.uk/burrow/tenmostvenomous.htm
However, some think that there are some non-australian links in the top ten, like in this resolved question:
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/?qid=1006050518629
If we consider the entire world, then the sea snake is much more venomous than any of it's land friends. Here's a link for that:

The Fierce Snake, also known as the Small Scaled Snake and Inland Taipan.
Although known as the most venomous snake in the world, there have been no human fatalities from the Fierce Snake (Inland Taipan). All known bites have been treated using anti-venom.

The Inland Taipan of Australia has venom 800 times more potent than a cobra's. It can kill a full-grown African elephant or inject enough venom in one bite to kill 100 men.
