How long should a Fridge Freezer stand before you switch it on? Does the gases need to settle for 12-24 hours or less?

New or second-hand - precautions are similar.
1. Ensure the appliance is standing on a level surface - adjust feet. If there is a very slight slope make sure it is towards the back of the appliance. This ensures it can drain properly and that the door(s) will close to if not properly shut.
2. Clean the inside thoroughly - even a new appliance - with a suitable bactericidal non-tainting cleaner, and wipe dry. Moulds can form at very low temperatures on any residues inside, including those from manufacturing.
3. Check there is no packing material left round or above the compressor - often new appliances have polystyrene pads inserted to prevent compressor vibration during transportation (the compressor has flexible rubber shock-absorbing mountings).
4. Yes, do leave to stand for 24 hours before switching on. This is to allow the refrigerant (liquid gas) to settle back down to the compressor.
5. And yes, after switching on, do wait until the appliance reaches its correct operating temperatures, before placing foods inside. This can take from 6 to 12 hours depending on the temperature you wish to achieve.
6. User Manuals often sadly skimp on such detail - hope this helps.

The advice given with most fridge freezers is that they should be allowed to settle after transportation for up to a day.

The manual that came with your fridge should indicate the time required for your particular model.

letting the air escape the gas for 12 hours should be sufficient to allow your refrigerator to operate properly
