They usually are the 2nd shift to be created if a company is expanding, so why aren't they the 1st shift?

I totally agree...I used to work "3rd shift" and hated it...but I think you have a VALID point...If you like to analyze things, which I do! I'm glad I'm not the only one!!!

Oh yeah I now work at 3 am to 1pm...most people ask me If I work at nite or during the day...to them it's still nite time (most people are sleeping-except third shift...lol) to me its day time...just a thought :)

A day may for example be divided into three shifts each of eight hours, and an employee works just one of those shifts; they might for example be 00:00 to 08:00, 08:00 to 16:00, 16:00 to 24:00 (times given in the 24-hour clock). Generally, first shift refers to the day shift, with second shift running from late afternoon to nightfall, and third shift being the night shift. On occasion, more complex schedules are used, perhaps involving employees changing shifts, in order to operate during weekends as well, in which case there will be four or more sets of employees.

Just a guess here.

Most jobs work the typical "9 to 5" shift. The hours may vary. For example, one factory I worked at, the first shift was 7 to 3.

That is the benchmark for comparison. Since that is the typical work shift, it is the first shift. The second shift is evening, and so on.

In a sense, it's similar to why September, October, November, and December were named for being the 7th through 10th months, though they are actually the 9th through 12th months. The calendar did not begin in March, as intended, but starts in January instead. So that numbering was screwed up.

Despite the fact that midnight marks the official start of the day, most people consider the day to begin at dawn. As such, the shifts are numbered that way.

I worked at a place that had three shifts of employees. They named each shift or tour at the time that the employee was to report to work.

Tour 1 was for employees who started working anytime after 8 PM at night until 3:59 AM.
Tour 2 was for employees who started at 4 AM until 11:59 AM.
Tour 3 was for employees who started at 12 noon until 7:59 PM.
