I'm not being anti-semetic, although most people might answer a question like this with an accusation like that. We're willing to start the war to end all wars for these guys so I think it's a vaild question.

jack_f, can you give me one example of Israel doing something for us? I understand guilt over the holocaust, and I understand Israel needs help. But what good can it possibly do anybody for america to take sides over there? Why Israel among all other nations that need help?

Back in World War II the U.S. pretty much ignored the plight of the Jews until the end of the war when they found the concentration camps. I forget which year it was, but sometime before the war actually started a boat full of Jews came to America trying to escape the growing problems in Germany and the surrounding countries. The U.S. didn't believe them and sent them back and those people suffered as soon as they got back. After World War II the Jews took over Israel. Normally the U.S. would have at least spoken out against such an action, but they felt damned guilty about abandoning them in the first place in World War II. That was the initial reason. Now Isarael is not only our best ally but also our most powerful ally in that particualr par tof the world and we need help there considering that the whole Meditteranian Sea region is one of the hottest spots in the world for violence and old vendettas.

Israel has the best intelegence in the middle east (I dont mean they are the smartest i mean they have operatives in EVERY country in the middle east nothing happens there that they dont know about). they are also the ONLY established democracy in the middle east where we have few allies, and by far the strongest military power in teh region as well. sharing of information between us and israel has ben VERY valuable. the feelings of guilt over WWII pretty much passed away with the majority of the generation that fought that war. now we need all the friends we can get in a region that hates us.

Israel is one of the only states in the Middle East that is simply trying to enjoy peace and prosperity. Its attackers constantly harass it in the name of a senseless, irrational religion; their concern is not peace or prosperity, but mindless destruction.
The United States recognizes this. It wants to aid Israel as a fellow free nation, and to ensure that the rational and peaceful do not perish at the hands of a nihilistic ideology.

You said we're is it the United States your talking about? If so we are not going top get involve in this unless we try to settle. Israel did the right thing, they got bombed and 2 kidnapped, if your going to start something, go with it and don't let the other side get the upper hand. This is what the states is lacking, rules or war, there isn't any.

I'll try to give a simple answer to a complicated problem. first, they are they only democratic government in that entire region and thus our biggest and most strategic ally. and second having seen war first hand, i can attest to the fact that what you see on the news and what really goes on at ground level are very rarely the same thing.

Well the simplistic view is it was the only democratic country over in the middle east for decades. So it was sort of the only kindred spirit government around.

Guilt over the holocaust. We gave them Isreal as a homeland after WWII and we would feel bad if it got taken away.
