According to legend, Abner Doubleday invented baseball in Cooperstown, New York in 1839. The legend is simply that: a legend. Baseball's origins are much more complex. It is now believed that the first organized games tood place in the late 1840s in New Jersey. From there the game grew into America's Pastime and then became America's Past-It's-Time, in many people's minds

Abner Doubleday (June 26, 1819 – January 26, 1893), was a career U.S. Army officer and Union general in the American Civil War. He fired the first shot in defense of Fort Sumter, the opening battle of the war. Some believe he should be credited with the invention of baseball, although he himself made no such claim.

I can't believe how many people are saying Abner Doubleday invented the game. If you really believe that, then you need to pick up a basic baseball history text.

Since the game developed from cricket, rounders, and who knows what else, it's impossible to say who really invented it. However, Alexander Cartwright is the one who deserves the credit for many of the game's "modern" innovations. Check out his cool hat in this picture:

Also there should be credit given to Alexander Joy Cartwright (1820-1892) of New York who invented the modern baseball field in 1845. Alexander Cartwright and the members of his New York Knickerbocker Base Ball Club, devised the first rules and regulations for the modern game of baseball.

Abner Doubleday is publicly credited with it.

Alexander Cartwright is considered to be its true inventor of the modern game.

But the roots go all the way back to Pittsfield, Massachusetts in the 1700's - predating both - in a game called Townball.

Really, there is no single correct answer. But if you want to use the "official version", it is Abner Doubleday in Cooperstown, NY in 1839.

there's a popular legend about Abner Doubleday during the civil war in the 1832..
The baseball as we know it started with the leagues in New York leaded by Alexander Cartwright

But talking about baseball....(games with ball and bats)...we can go way back to the Persian and Egyptians times

this is a very old game....it goes way back in the history

Abner Doubleday was given credit for it, but only through an investigation done by Spalding, which everyone knows was just as fake as Bond's HR records.
It goes back to far to be certain of anything really.

Abner Doubleday. Forget what exact year. I do know for a fact that the first official professional game was played in 1842. (meaning paid players)
