They should put random holes in the ground that you could just fall into if you step on them... that way the 40 yard dash would be more interesting.

Using a weight sled tends to help. You mainly need to become a sprinter. I worked with our track sprint team in high school since they know best how to improve explosiveness.

Yep, sprinting often is your best option. Work out your legs as well and do some resistance training (possibly in a pool).
