The democrats can't win with one as they are already perceived in certain quarters as a "Black" party. A black candidate does nothing to break the current 50/50 split in American politics.

As soon as the republicans nominate one, he/she will win.


This will also break the traditional democrat support base and open everything up. Even if they only win 15% of the black vote. What have they got now, 2%?

I think it will happen soon. A lot of people say that American's aren't ready for it but I disagree. I just think that's people holding on to old ideas. Right now there are millions of baby boomers and older, who generally speaking grew up in an era of greater racism and are more likely to hold on to those ideas. In the next 20 to 25 years a lot of them are going to die which means they can't cast a vote. I think by and large the younger generation doesn't care what color your skin is when weighed against previous generations so I see it happening within the next 30 years.

Colin Powell could have run a couple of years ago, but I think knows that the press will either dredge up something trivial from his past, like an unpaid parking ticket, and blow it out of perportion.
