Are you thinking about VOip ? Then it is Voice over IP.
It goes like this.
1 When you dial to somebody over the landline (telephone), the other person picks up the phone and attends the call and the connection is established. That line is engaged till the users disconnect the call.(Circuit Switched Network)
2. IP was essentially used for connecting computers , wherein more than one computer is connected in the same line. Meaning the lines are engaged by by multiple connections. More than one computer uses the same line but share time between them. (Packet switched network)
Now Voice is broken down to packets by sampling methodologies and pushed across the IP network in the same way as computers connect and received at the other end to be reconstructed and made audible. THAT IS VOICE OVER IP !
