*NSYNC came from Timberlake's mother, Lynn Harless. It was created from the last letter of each member's name: Justin, Chris, Joey, Lansten (a nickname created for Lance Bass, so the name scheme created before the departure of original member Jason would continue to fit), and JC.

They don't lip sync. I have seem them live & I can tell the difference. Their name is derived from the last letter of each of their names: justiN, chriS, joeY, lansteN (nickname), jC. Also because they sing & dance in sync.
