Just wash your dishes by hand. This way you'll save water -- good for the environment and your budget. If you had a ton of guests come by for meals / parties and doing the dishes is too overwhelming a task, you may want to use your dishwasher.

When you do need to use the dishwasher, you don't have to wash the dishes before putting them in. All you need to do is scrape off and rinse off the large food particles and other sticky stuff on your dishes. Dishwashers and dishwashing liquids have different efficiencies and strengths. Better scrape off the sticky stuff now, rather than having to re-wash your dishes later.

When dry, a dishwasher is actually good storage space. You may still want to run it though once a month to prevent molds from growing in there.

Good dishwashers have a grinder that will take care of food left on dishes, but it's always best to scrape off left over food before putting dishes in the dishwasher for sanitary purposes. Also, if the dishes are not washed soon after loading, the leftover food can start to smell and attract ants.

A quick rinse is all that's necessary and not a big deal.

You put your dishes in the washing machine? Are they all broken?

I only rinse massively dirty dishes before putting them into the dishwasher. Most newer dishwashers can handle it just fine - it's a waste of water to rinse them too much.

You put your dishes in a washing machine? Doesn't that shatter your dishes? How do clean out all the bits of glass before putting your CLOTHES in it?

I put mine in a DISHWASHER.

You don't need to wash them just rinse them off if you have a really good dishwasher.

::chuckles:: I've wonderred the same thing. I suppose it might be good for sterilizing dishes, but otherwise I just hand-wash. Meanwhile, I will still have the use of the bathroom in case someone wants to shower, it's not nearly as noisy or time-consuming, it doesn't use as much electricity, and IMHO it doesn't use quite as much water.

you don't wash them, you rinse them before putting them in. the dishwasher isn't a garbage disposal and you don't want to clean off big chunks of food out of it.
