The globe is already moving towards becoming a world culture.
The process is called Globalization and is being fought in various quarters by people who do not want it. They see it as a danger to their autonomy and distinct cultures.
They also fear losing economic advantages.
The process is inevitable however.
Protesters, religious crackdowns, terrorism all signs of the conflict, but no major world power is inherently against it, so it will happen.
But the process of blending so many histories and cultures, is a time consuming one. And not likely to be fully witnessed by anyone alive today.
The signs are all around though.
A single international business standard, common world laws, protection of copyright, the use of English as the standard language of trade and politics.
The most important part, the money parts, are getting there.
Religion will become less important with time.
Not to people, just to how they see themselves politically.
The most important thing as a planet ahead of us is the empowerment of women in the third world.
Once that half of humanity is free to express itself, things will get better.
But it will take persistence and patience on the part of the developed world.

From the standpoint of pure economics, the world is not an optimum currency area. Different parts of the world respond to the same external shock (say, a sharp increase in oil prices) differently, so there can be no monetary policy that will be good for everyone.
From the standpoint of human welfare, whether or not the world becomes one nation is irrelevant, because today, international conflicts are nowhere near as bloody as civil wars. Political unification of the world in and of itself will do nothing to reduce the incidence of civil conflict.

Globalization.. Just watch Tv regularly and learn. The European Union, United Nations. These are only 2 means for reaching the one-globe, one nation. Compare with history to make it clearer. The bad thing about this globalization however, is that the United States goverment(s) are trying to make everyone else Americans instead of Humans. I believe that in order to reach unity, we should all forget our religions, our nation, "pride" et cetera.

Once there are no more cultures who view killing those with opposing views as a more viable option than acceptance and compromise, then we can all live peacefully as a global nation. Sadly, in order to accomplish that, you really need to remove hardcore religious views as too many religions are all or nothing and contain factions that believe their views are worth fighting to death over. I doubt this will happen in our lifetimes, but I hope I am wrong.

It is so difficult...we would have to respect differences, and as you may think, things like the Lebanon Israel war show we don't.
We would have to get rid of selfishness and ask only what is rightful for our bare necessities, because people in other countries can't satisfy them.
Besides, we would have to make a giant worldwide constitution and apply it to give justice for everyone.
That would be so lovely but it is so hard...

We can never be one nation because our social, cultural, political and economic foundations are profoundly different. We speak different languages, believe in different things, react differently. We are the humankind, and that binds us together. And ofcourse, the fact that we live on a small peace of rock floating in the middle of nowhere.
