This is actually a VERY GOOD QUESTION despite what certain irritated people say. You can see that it produced many different answers. This is because nobody FULLY understands what the source (the *true* source) of all of these quarrels --> actually are. The news is very biased. One station can claim something completely outrageous, and the others then rush to state the same, so as to catch up with ratings and reliability. The media, is after all a business, so it is also based on monetary gains. There are few documentaries, articles and books that brave journalists have attempted, but those are always constructed with a personal view point, which is usually emotionally driven.
There are a lot of things that we need to learn about Isreal in order to understand why they have been the global bully for so long (at least they are still U.S. allies). You need to go way back to the origin. The Complete Idiot's Guide to Middle East History has really taught me alot. I suggest that.

Lebanon has an Islamic Militant group, Hezbollah, and it has power in their democratic government. Hezbollah started this conflict by crossing Israels boarder and killing 8 soldiers and kidnapping 2 (but they have been doing terrorist attacks for a long time). that was the straw that broke the camels back. Israel was sick of being attacked so they are fighting back. the only way to end the conflict is a complete dismantling of Hezbollah...but i heard something where is Hezbollah retreats away from Lebanon's southern boarder Israel would stop. but i doubt that will happen.
and yes, Israel is also fighting Palestine.

Israel if fighting Hezbollah, which is based in Lebanon. Lebanon for years has allowed Hezbollah to run rampant through its country without restriction. From what I've read, Hezbollah (and just about all of the Middle East)'s position is Israel should be wiped off the map. Israel's response to Hezbollah kidnapping its soldiers appears extreme, but at the same time, Hezbollah immerses itself into civilian areas and the only way to get at them is to take the fight to those areas. All in all, it's a nasty situation for all sides involved.

Do some research. And listen to current events.
Some will say it started when the Israelites came into the promised land. Others will say it started when the UN declared Israel again a country.
But the real reason they are fighting right now is the socalled Army of Allah (I don't think Allah is helping them) went into Israel and kidnapped Israeli soldiers. And Israel couldn't put up with that any more.
Actually Israel is fighting Hamas in the south and Hezbullah in the norht. Israel is fighting tow terrorist groups that happen to be based in the Gaza Strip and southern Lebanon.
I'm going to bet israel will win in the end. Since being reformed as a country they have a good track recorrd against agressors.

It is lebanon, though Gaza and the Northern place in Israel is called palestine.
Lebanon was created out of Isreal. The went to war about that and Israel took some land away from Lebanon. Later they gave it back and then some, but lebanon still says that Israel has some of there land still. so Hezbollah and Hammas send suicide attacks against Israel. and one of those attacks provoked this.

The 1982 Lebanon war began on 6 June 1982, when Israel invaded again for the purpose of attacking the Palestine Liberation Organization. The Israeli army laid siege to Beirut. During the conflict, according to Lebanese sources, between 15,000–20,000 people were killed, mostly civilians.
The 2006 Lebanon War, also called the 2006 Israel–Hezbollah War and known in Lebanon as the July War and in Israel as the Second Lebanon War was a 34-day military conflict in Lebanon, Northern Israel and the Golan Heights. The principal parties were Hezbollah paramilitary forces and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). The conflict started on 12 July 2006, and continued until a United Nations-brokered ceasefire went into effect in the morning on 14 August 2006, though it formally ended on 8 September 2006 when Israel lifted its naval blockade of Lebanon. Due to unprecedented Iranian military support to Hezbollah before and during the war, some consider it the first round of the Iran–Israel proxy conflict, rather than a continuation of the Arab–Israeli conflict.
The conflict was precipitated by the Zar'it-Shtula incident. On 12 July 2006, Hezbollah fighters fired rockets at Israeli border towns as a diversion for an anti-tank missile attack on two armored Humvees patrolling the Israeli side of the border fence. The ambush left three soldiers dead. Two Israeli soldiers were abducted and taken by Hezbollah to Lebanon. Five more were killed in Lebanon, in a failed rescue attempt. Hezbollah demanded the release of Lebanese prisoners held by Israel in exchange for the release of the abducted soldiers. Israel refused and responded with airstrikes and artillery fire on targets in Lebanon. Israel attacked both Hezbollah military targets and Lebanese civilian infrastructure, including Beirut's Rafic Hariri International Airport. The IDF launched a ground invasion of Southern Lebanon. Israel also imposed an air and naval blockade. Hezbollah then launched more rockets into northern Israel and engaged the IDF in guerrilla warfare from hardened positions.
The conflict is believed to have killed between 1,191 and 1,300 Lebanese people (mostly civilians), and 165 Israelis (including 44 civilians). It severely damaged Lebanese civil infrastructure, and displaced approximately one million Lebanese and 300,000–500,000 Israelis.

Hezbollah kidnapped some Israeli soldiers by entering Israel.
Hamas is bombing Israel after they pulled out of Gaza.
It is the terrorists Hezbollah and Hamas (which are supported by Syria and Iran) that they are fighting, not Lebanon or the Palestinians! Wake up!

Lebanon and Israel are NOT fighting. Hezbollah and Israel are fighting. It is a matter of self protection for Israel to try to eliminate any threat from Hezbollah. Hezbollah is financed and supported by Syria and Iran, two despotic nations with bloody murder on their hands.

I believe it is an excuse to engage IRAN and SYRIA (supporters of Lebanon) into a war against Israel so the US (allied to Israel) can strike IRAN and avoid the development of their nuclear program... it looks a lot like the jump between Afghanistan and Iraq...
