I am entering my junior year of college, and finally had to apply for a student loan. I don't qualify for a subsidized student loan, so I'm going to be paying interest on the loan for the rest of school. I am currently working as a legal assistant, but it doesn't pay very much, and requires me to work during the middle of the day, when I'm going to be at school during the fall.
My question is, has anyone found a variety of job that pays ok and has flexible hours (or can be done from home) that would help me pay off my loan without getting behind in school? I am taking 17 hours this semester so it might be tricky. Any ideas?

Try looking for an on campus job or a part time job that has you work short hours in the evening. I worked as a receptionist at a women's gym for 4 hours a few times a week and on Saturday mornings and was able to do school work there. It is hard to pay for loans while in school, so you can also check and see if you can defer it until you are out of school (may be an option). On campus jobs are very flexible, try the bookstore or a cafe. Sometimes the pay is not very very good, but you can get more hours because they will work around your schedule more than an office with hours during the day. Hope that helps!

There are many jobs that can be flexible toward a student schedule. First of all, check out jobs around campus and also any waiting/serving opportunities. Your school most likely has a career center website or center that could point you in the right direction. Also, check the school newspaper/website for job postings. Many professors need childcare and are willing to be very flexible around a student's schedule. Good luck!

Wow, you're lucky that you haven't had to take out any loans so far. Don't worry too much about working to pay off the loan now. Finish school, get a good job, and worry then.

With unsubsidized loans, you shouldn't have to pay the interest out of pocket as long as you're in school, but it does charge up. In most cases, you can opt to pay the interest to keep the principal down, but if you don't they just add it on to the total amount of your loan. Ask your financial aid office about the options that are available to you.
