A zip file is a compressed file or compressed files.

The purpose of zipping/compressing a file or files is to make the size of the file(s) decrease/shrink..

For example, if you have a Excel file or a text file that is 10 MB in size, you can zip it to turn it into a smaller file...

To use the contents of a zip file, you must uncompress it or unzip it first.

Note: You must have a software program installed to open zip files and view/extract its contents. Windows XP have one built-in.

A zip file is a compressed file. Take below as an example

When you look at a file you have this.
Sally Sue Rode Over the Houses To See Her Mom

A Zip File eliminates the spaces and compresses everything into a smaller file.
SallySueRodeOverTheHousesToSeeHerMom
(of course the compression is a lot more, but it also makes it unreadable)

Zipped files (with file extensions like .zip and .rar) are compressed files, but do not necessarily reduce the file size considerably in most instances. Most users "zip" up files into these archives for easy transfers between locations, since you can stick several files into one zipped up file, and even other zipped files within one big file. Also, zip files are frequently used on music sites to prevent hotlinking.

Programs used to zip or unzip files include Winzip and Winrar. =)

The ZIP file format is a popular data compression and archival format.

A ZIP file contains one or more files that have been compressed or stored.

You can put more than one regular file in a folder, and then zip the folder to make it one single file that you can use to extract the files if you ever need them again.

Zip files are files that have been compressed to make them smaller so they take up less space on your hard drive and are easier to transmit over the Internet (where smaller is better) or will make them fit on a floppy, CD, etc. A zip file can contain any other type of file. It can also contain several files compressed together.
