It's all about insecurity. Fear of gays and blacks and whites and religions and cultures that you don't belong to, therefore don't understand. If you fear something, your best defense is to discredit it. You discredit by belittling others that you fear, or somehow make yourself seem superior.
First, one must be completely comfortable in their sexuality, the legitimacy of their race or culture and their belief in their God. Then one should be exposed to other thoughts and ideas in a non threatening environment. Where opposite views are expressed clearly without insult to others.
Fear recedes, understanding grows, and "the chain" will eventually break. But Don't count on it anytime soon. Also, don't loose sleep over it.

people are just ignorant...i suppose everyone will learn in good time though. in this life or another.
and just a note...pageans are a separate religion than athiests.
my mom is a pagean. its alot like wicca.
&&& i go to a pagan community w/ her sometimes, and there are always these rednecks lately smashing in the mailboxes and calling them "devil worshipers"
pagans/wiccans do not even believe in satan. if ne1 is a devil worshiper, its the christians. christianity is the only major religion that belives in satan, pagans dont even give 'satan' notice to existance.
someone pointed out once, that satanists must be a form of christianity...i basicly explained that above.

AMEN SISTA! I totally agree with you 100%. There is so much hate in this world, and too little kindness. Everyone is too concerned with judging others, they can't possibly find time to enjoy themselves. Those who place labels on everyone else only do so in attempts to make themselves feel better (temporarily), but deep down, something is tearing them apart, so this is how they deal with their inner self that's torn. I don't judge these people either though, it wouldn't make me any better than they are. I simply pray for them and have faith that maybe someday......we will all get along. (I'll keep my fingers crossed)

People use derogatory names because it dehumanizes the victim.
Sort of like American soldiers referring to the Japs and the Krauts during WW2, or the kooks of Vietnam, or the camelbacks and towelheads of the Middle East. If you're about to put someone down (or kill them), it's much easier to do so if you don't think of that person as another human.

Unfortunately, people fear want they do not understand. Fear leads to aggression for the sake of preservation. For example, some white people hate black people when in fact, whites held blacks in slavery, separated families, murdered millions of blacks, upheld lynchings and Jim Crow laws, denied education and jobs. After all that, they say we hate you and quit whining!
It's all about self preservation which has an economic benefit. People group themselves (in the highest level group that will accept them) and based on what they believe will give them the best edge in life. That group then positions itself to benefit its members to the exclusion of nonmembers.
