I was in high school and college during the 80s. I actually hated the music and though MTV ruined music. It became more about looks than talent. Now, some years later it is fun to listen to the old 80's one-hit-wonders, etc. But truthfuly, can you name one good band from the 80s. The only thing close might be U2.

The hair styles and clothing of the 80s was terrible as well. The 90s ushered in "grunge" which was depressing and dark. It wasn't until 1995 or so that music and style started to really get better

The punk hairdos, and the more conservtive variations of them, (e.e. layered spiked look for women leaving them with a mild punk look) were hideously ugly! They really did not look as good on many people, as did the more natural looks of the 90s and 2000s. A lot of the women especially who kept their look in hair and did not go with the punk look and its toned down variations, had better looking hair.

A lot of the music was good and the songs were very catchy. It is generally not taken as seriously as the music of some of the other eras before and after because of the punk influence. The music often ws not considered to be as deep. This circumstance was the misfortune of many good music artists of the 80s such as Nina, who put out the song '99 Red Balloons'. The 80s "look" was generally artificial and suggestive of a heavy level of materialism and fakeness. Many of the clothing styles did not look very comfortable. In summary, the fashion and "look" were artificial, but much of the music was good. It sure was an improvement from the trends of the 70s such as full blown disco.

Of course, whatever looks normal seems to be what we are used to, and generally what is currently the going trend. When a lot of people groom or dress a certain way it starts to look normal and a person can quickly get used to it. Changes can break a monotony.

I think it was a cool time, but some of the looks sucked! I hope this sharing of opinion helps.

I was in high school and college during the 80's. I remember spending 30-45 minutes a day trying to mold my hair into the one acceptable female hair style. Wearing jeans so tight (no lyrcra blends back then) a person couldn't bend over or take a deep breath (remember those waistlines went atleast 2 inches above the belly button! Of course the dayglow colors were so flattering! Of course all the teen movies had everybody having lots of sex with lots of people and it was great--nobodies feelings ever got hurt. If somebody ended up pregnant you could just go for the easy abortion. A handy shot of penicillin took care of any diseases once and for all. Of course only whores could give you a disease not your fellow classmates! Of course since you weren't even in grade school you probably didn't get to experience any of that fun.

The music was fabulous though, and I do miss my purple eye shadow and skinny waist.

In hindsight yes it was great, but at the time I wasn't really into the music at all. I was listening to Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin etc, but I do remember hearing things like White Lines for the first time and The Smiths, Flock of Seagulls or Simple Minds & U2's Pride etc. I left school in 87 and was into dressing in black and being depressed - er, so I much more prefer my jet set lifestyle now. Nowadays (God I sound like my dad) kids leaving school fall into catagories by fashion and it sort of limits them a bit I think - it was quite easy to chop and change and try different things then. But I do like listening to 80's compliations.

I was 5-15 in the 80's and absolutely LOVED it....fun times for a pre-teen and teenager. The clothes don't seem as cool now as they did back then, but the styles are coming back....hello, do you not see leggings and leg warmers EVERYWHERE? And the music was the BEST! I still listen to a lot of the music, and my daughter likes it too!

I remember the 80,s. I lived it. The clothes...everyone dressed up all the time. It was all about the look. The music and night life was fun. It was a time of over excess...all about the money.

I was in my twenties in the 80's and it wan't always as cool as it looks in the movies and magazines. I had a lot of friends who blew all their money on coke. It was a time of excess. The one thing I really miss though is that people were much more friendly and you could chat with people just about anywhere like movie lineups.

It's funny to look back at the hairstyles and clothes.
But MAN, those times were great!
Not sure if it was because it was a fun time in my life, but I suspect we had fewer problems as a society and people were more upbeat.

Also, Reagan had a way of making people feel good - even the people that hated him.

Yes, most defiantly I remember, I was a kid myself, but I remember you did not hear so much trouble, people where better behave.
The music was awesome, very significant. Those were real word which even little ears could hear. Radios was not so provocative as it is today, Fashion was the bomb, decent but very sensual. I remember girls were very girly, with their high heels showing their legs and wonderful long hair. Guys wow, they used to blow me away, always well dressed with their ties, nice ironed pants, and colorful shirt, beautiful long hair. Wow, of course I remember, well did those days go.... II want to go back...lol
