Carpel Tunnel or RSI (Repetitive Stress Injury) is serious. It can be treated by a simple surgery, and requires you to wear a brace to ease the stress on the nerve.

I've known plenty of people with it who do some light to moderate typing. Sometimes, they have to take a break and limber up with some exercises, but it hasn't prevented them from working in Administrative/Clerical positions. Perfect example, our department secretary has it and she regularly wears her brace when typing. Periodically, she stops for a short break, and then continues on.

I would suggest you speak with your doctor and let him or her tell you how much typing you can handle. Unless it's extremely serious and debilitating, I don't think you'll be told to change fields entirely.
