Schools can unfortunately be like prison yards were inmates are segregated. I can remember in elementary school and a little bit in junior high were no one even thought about "race". As adolescence evolved so did an awareness of the group mentality. People group themselves by common characteristics such as culture, class, attractiveness, sports, etc. It also has to do with parenting. Parents that speak down on other "races" cause their children to develop the same mentality and parents that dont talk about peer pressure allow their children to become victim to it.

Actaully kids have a better grip on this subject than adults, although some have been taught to be racial, they appear to judge by character not color!!Some however still look at color, all we can do is say God forgive them.Good luck God bless:O)

That is only true for kids who haven't been taught the negative effects of racism. Unfortunately, those kids outnumber the kids who know better, and that makes it hard to befriend someone of a different skin color.

Maybe because it's an uncomfortable situation for them because they grew up in a prejudice family, or, the war that's going on right now, or, wars from the past come in to mind.

Because of stereotypes, possibly passed down from their parents.

I think it's mostly because kids generally want to study and have fun; they don't want to deal with other peoples' issues.
