You have thought it through and have decided what is best for you and the country, there is noting wrong with that.

I would guess that it is because today's GOP is dominated by radical Republicans, like the ones that gave Lincoln himself such headaches. True conservatives believe in limited government, fiscal discipline, avoiding unnecessary foreign adventures, resisting the efforts of government to encroach on individual liberties, strong state roles in our federalism, and conserving the Constitution. By contrast, the radicals who control the GOP have abandoned every single one of these conservative principles: the President believes he has "inherent powers" that are not limited in any way by the Constitution; the GOP Congress has replaced "tax and spend" policies, which at least made some basic sense, with "borrow and spend" policies that spell economic disaster in the future; they have recklessly engaged us in foreign adventures with few allies, an overstretched and undersupplied military, and utopian fantasies in place of real objectives; they have actively strengthened the government's powers to surveille and monitor the formerly private activities of individual citizens; and, far from conserving the Constitution, they have a raft of proposals for changing it (gay marriage, limit the 1st Amendment to exclude flag-related speech, change the requirements for the Presidency so Arnold can run, and so on and so on and so on).
The reason you are not a Republican is that you are probably a real conservative. The reason your family is tolerant (beyond just basic human goodness, I would hope) is because they are probably real conservatives, too, and only support the GOP out of habit or personal dislike of some GOP opponents. There is no problem with you, your family, or your upbringing; the problem is that your party has abandoned people like you in favor of religious zealots who are anything but conservative politically. Real conservatives should oppose today's GOP, not belong to it.

First off you have your own mind. Second, don't tell others what your stand is tell them you are independent. You vote for the individual not the party. My husband and i disagree often so we stay away from that topic.
Just because your parents are highly educated doesn't mean the have all the answers. Just hold respect for them as parents and keep away from the subject as much as possible. Parents just want the best for their kids and they feel that is the best so they will try to persuade you when they get the opportunity. If they continue to push things just gently let them know you love them and they need not worry because you respect them and their opinion.

It sounds to me as though you are feeling guilty not of being a democrat, but of not following in your parent's shoes. This is not a question of politics--I think you are probably quite sound there--it is a question of psychology. Partisian politics is about creating debate, healthy debate (or at least that's the theory), and I don't think you have any sort of problem at all. Just keep thinking.

I'm moderate, and I find that openmindedness is more common in Democrats. This same openmindedness is common in our younger generation. Your parents and grandparents had a different upbringing and have probably more old-fashioned values than you and others of your generation

Let's see...here's an answer...I don't know and, more importantly, I don't care!
Hey, I may have figured it out....Because you're a coward! If you're going to email somebody, don't run away like a scared little boy and close the possibility of rebuttal. But that's they way you cowards are, isn't it!

You have made your own mind up. That is to be commended. Your family seems to have accepted it pretty well too. Ignore the ignorant jackasses who are hostile. Those people have not learned what you have, how to use their brain.

What is so wrong about believing in what YOU want, not your family wants you to believe?
I don't see the issue here.

Obviously, your upbring was fair and balanced and allowed you to think for yourself . Your parents should be commended. Where is it written that we follow in our parent's footsteps?
