Most bettas live for about 3 years, and are about 6 month to a year old in the petstore. With proper care bettas have been know to live for as many as 5 years. The keys are watching water quality, temp, and food intake. Not changing the water weekly in an unfiltered bowl. Subjecting your betta to rapid water temp changes, or cold night. Over feeding will kill the poor guy in a matter of months, or shave year off his life. (Avoid live, and frozen food avoids diseases. Use sterile freeze-dried food, or flakes/pellets.) Also bettas live longer as loners. Every time you add a fish/snail/plant to his tank bowl you risk disease or fighting.

For me, about a year and a half. I keep him in a pretty small bowl and live in a climate with harsh winters (I know they like warmth). My first beta died of a growth on his face and the other one's still alive and a little over a year old. I did have a friend whose beta died within six months, but she rarely cleaned his tank and the tank was VERY tiny. I'm thinking a larger bowl/tank and frequent cleaning might be the key to keeping them healthy.

Most bettas in pet stores are already a couple years old. Sometimes you see ones that are younger - have fuller fins, smaller heads. If you can get one from a breeder they will live several years. Otherwise 2 to 3 years.

My Beta is 3 years and still very healthy and active. He/She sits on a window sill, which must seem like the tank is huge to he/her, summer and winter. I change the water regularly and feed once a day.

We've had them live up up to 6 years. I have heard longer than that. They are hardy fish. In their natural environment, the can tolerate shallow , mucky puddles. No need for that in a home, though.

Mine lasted for about 6 months. But never get 2 bettas because if you know bettas then they'll eat each other.
