Empire Strikes Back.
it was a fantastic sequel in its own right...it was most clever and witty than any other Star Wars film, the bad guys won...Vader is Lukes father revelation...great film.
Others that I had considered but I catergorise as great too are...
Bladerunner...great story and had a lot of hidden depth and made you root for the bad guy with you realising you were rooting for him.
Aliens...another great sequel and a interesting change around from the first film.
Predator...interesting concept and superb predator creature.
Galaxy Quest...Tim Allen's best film i think...A great satire of star trek without taking the piss. I thought it was a great story, and the aliens were great.

Definitely the star wars series. I know you asked for a single movie, but I would lump the middle three together as the best sci-fi of all time. If you forced me to choose a specific one, I'd say Empire strikes back. One of the very rare movies where the bad guys win.

dont know if it really is a sci-fi but "Solent Green" (not sure of the sp) is pretty creepy. what if our world ended up like that, Yikes!
